SpaceChem Used as Educational Tool in Schools

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK games industry, tells us that SpaceChem, an indie puzzle game available for the PC, is being adopted by some schools to help teach children programming concepts such as in-order execution, nested routines and logic gates. The company behind the game, Zachtronics Industries, is offering the game at a steep discount to educational institutions worldwide who are interested in using it as a teaching and learning tool.

“Video games are fast becoming educational tools,” said Dr Richard Wilson, CEO of TIGA. “According to recent research, many teachers have used videogames to support learning in classes. SpaceChem illustrates how video games are being used for learning purposes.”

Wilson also praised the work of the LearnPlay Foundation, a non-profit organization aiming to use games to assist with education in schools, communities and alternative education establishments.

“It is excellent to see video games being used in such positive ways to further education and learning,”       – said Wilson.
