Questions arose about engaging with disadvantaged young people, supporting the elderly and an insight into how LearnPlay has helped guide one individual from learner to employee of the company.

Engaging the hard to reach (ESF Works)

Many young people respond to gaming technology, and LearnPlay Foundation has capitalised on this interest to engage some of the hardest-to-reach in deprived areas of the Black Country. With an ESF community grant co-financed by the Skills Funding Agency and West Midlands Councils, LearnPlay delivered innovative sessions utilising gaming consoles, creating an environment that felt safe for even those most removed from education, employment or training.

TIGA, the trade association representing the UK games industry, tells us that SpaceChem, an indie puzzle game available for the PC, is being adopted by some schools to help teach children programming concepts such as in-order execution, nested routines and logic gates. The company behind the game, Zachtronics Industries, is offering the game at a steep discount to educational institutions worldwide who are interested in using it as a teaching and learning tool.

LearnPlay Foundation is pleased to announce that it is now a registered ASDAN short courses centre. This means that as well as our engagement and soft skills courses and sessions, we are now able to offer accredited learning which still uses our unique console and gaming approach.

Since achieving registered status on 26 January 2010, we are pleased to announce we have awarded nearly 300+ ASDAN awards

We are currently delivering the following ASDAN Awards courses: Activities with Peer Tutoring, Citizenship, Active Citizenship, Peer Mentoring, Community Involvement & Volunteering, AimHigher, Enterprise, English and Expressive Arts.

Digital savvy youngsters invited to board the BOA

The Midlands’ first academy for Creative, Digital and Performing Arts, Birmingham Ormiston Academy (BOA), is launching five events, touring the region during the October half term week on a customised digital bus.

BOA is sponsored by Ormiston Trust, Birmingham City University and partnered with Maverick TV and the BRIT School. It will open in 2011 for sixth form years and will include 14-16 year-olds in 2012.
